Just saw Elon Musk clarifying something interesting about his background. He's been pretty vocal that he's actually from British/English heritage, not Afrikaner like people assume. Apparently this matters to him enough that he posted about it, drawing a parallel to J.R.R. Tolkien who was also born in the same country. Kind of wild how much Musk is into Tolkien's work - he's mentioned it multiple times and it even came up in his whole thing with Grimes. The context is pretty fascinating though. Musk grew up in South Africa but his family roots trace back to 19th century British settlers, whereas Afrikaner families descended from Dutch and German settlers centuries earlier. Two totally different cultural backgrounds even though both groups ended up in the same place. Apparently there was some blog post that got his heritage wrong and that's what prompted the clarification. Anyway, it's one of those random details about famous people that actually explains more than you'd think.
