Don't remind me again today

There's this recurring argument—seen it from folks like Yud—that AI infrastructure spending is somehow competing with other investment options, as if companies are making tough choices.

But here's what the actual numbers show: look at the hyperscale players like Alphabet and Microsoft. Before the AI boom, they were barely touching their capex budgets relative to what they were pulling in as free cash flow. Mountains of cash just sitting there.

So this whole "opportunity cost" narrative? Doesn't really hold up when you've got tech giants swimming in liquidity and historically underspending on infrastructure. They're not choosing between AI and something else—they're finally deploying capital they already had piling up.

Wait, I need to keep an eye on this logical loophole... Is this pile of cash really idle? Or has it already been allocated to some opaque projects that we can't see?

Ha, Yud's trap is just for show, that pile of cash at the big company has long been sitting idle and is starting to get moldy.

Haha, that's right. I found it funny when I saw some people pessimistic about AI investment costs—Microsoft and Google's pile of idle cash has long been sleeping in the account, and now they finally have a place to spend it.

In simple terms, big companies are not really making choices; they are just earning money while lying down.

In simple terms, these big companies have too much idle cash; they are just taking out the money that has been sitting on the shelf to play with.

nah the "tough choices" framing is peak cope. these giants had dead money rotting on balance sheets for years, now they're just channeling it somewhere that actually moves needle. history rhymes except this time the capital wasn't constrained, it was just... dormant. kinda wild how fast the narrative shifts once numbers don't lie anymore

Oh, this is exactly what I've been wanting to say. Big companies have so much money with nowhere to spend it; it's piled up sky-high. Microsoft, Google, and the others had really low capex ratios before, but now with AI, they've finally found a reason to throw out their idle cash. Opportunity cost? That's just a story they tell retail investors.
