Here is the complete guide to the Gate.io (often referred to as ) order types explained clearly . Understanding these is essential for managing your risks and executing your trades effectively.
1. Market Order
How it works: This order executes your trade instantly at the best available current market price.
When to use: Use this when speed is your top priority and you want to enter or exit a trade immediately without waiting.
Pros & Cons: It fills instantly, but during high volatility, you might experience "slippage" (buying at a slightly higher price or selling at a lower price than expected).
2. Limit Order
How it works: You specify a exact price at which you want to buy or sell. The order will only execute if the market price reaches your specified limit.
When to use: Use this when you want to buy a coin at a lower price than the current rate, or sell it at a higher price.
Pros & Cons: It gives you total control over your entry and exit prices. However, if the market never reaches your price, your order will remain pending and unfilled.
3. Trigger Order (Conditional Order)
How it works: This is an advanced order where you set a conditional Trigger Price. Once the market hits this trigger, Gate.io automatically places either a Market or Limit order for you.
Example: If Bitcoin is at $64,000 and you want to buy only if it breaks past resistance at $65,000, you set the Trigger Price to $65,000. When it hits that mark, your order goes live.
When to use: Perfect for trading breakouts or when you cannot sit in front of the screen to watch the charts all day.
4. TP/SL (Take-Profit / Stop-Loss Order)
How it works: This is your primary risk management tool, especially in Futures trading.
Take Profit (TP): Automatically closes your position and secures your gains once the coin hits your target profit price.
Stop Loss (SL): Automatically cuts your losses and closes your position if the market moves against you, preventing your account from getting liquidated (going to zero).
5. Advanced Order Attributes (Time in Force)
Gate.io offers professional configurations for your Limit orders to control how they behave:
Post-Only: Ensures your order enters the order book as a "Maker" order and is never executed instantly against an existing order. This helps you save money by avoiding higher "Taker" fees.
IOC (Immediate or Cancel): The order must be executed immediately. Any portion of the order that cannot be filled instantly is automatically canceled.
FOK (Fill or Kill): The entire order must be executed immediately in full, or the whole order is completely canceled (no partial fills allowed).
