Trump hopes to extend the diplomatic negotiations, but if talks break down, he reserves the option to use military force against Iran.

According to the Wall Street Journal, U.S. President Trump recently convened a national security team meeting, after receiving the latest briefing on the Iran situation, he has not yet officially decided to launch a new military strike on Iran, but expressed willingness to give diplomacy "more time."

Several U.S. officials pointed out that Trump emphasized during the meeting that, until diplomatic avenues are fully exhausted, military action remains a "reserved option" rather than the "only option."

Iran proposes Hormuz Strait exchange plan

Meanwhile, Iran also put forward a specific counter-proposal. According to Saudi Arabian media Alhadath, Iran plans to open the world's most important oil route, the Hormuz Strait, as a bargaining chip in negotiations with the U.S.

Iran also demands that, before signing any formal agreement, two key issues be prioritized: first, the lifting of U.S. economic sanctions on Iran; second, the return of frozen Iranian funds.

The Hormuz Strait, as a vital chokepoint for about 20% of global oil trade, handles over 30 million barrels of oil daily and is one of Iran's strongest bargaining chips.
