Golden Finance News reports that on May 14, according to foreign media, sources familiar with the matter say that Microsoft (MSFT.O) is seeking to acquire an artificial intelligence startup to prepare for reducing its dependence on its once-critical partner, OpenAI. The potential acquisition would help Microsoft stock up on AI talent and advance its previously proposed goal of building an advanced AI model by next year. Sources say that this spring, Microsoft had considered acquiring the code-generation startup Cursor, but ultimately abandoned the plan after an internal assessment concluded that the deal would be difficult to pass regulatory scrutiny because Microsoft owns GitHub Copilot. Microsoft is currently in talks with Inception, a small startup founded by a team from Stanford University, focused on developing large language models using a technology called “diffusion.” Microsoft’s venture capital fund, M12, participated in Inception’s seed round financing of 50 million dollars at the end of 2025. In the bidding process, Microsoft also faces strong competition from other tech giants, especially SpaceX led by Elon Musk. Sources indicate that SpaceX also reached out to Inception.
