Altcoin season is one of the most anticipated periods for crypto investors, and rightly so – during these times, some assets can increase in value by hundreds or even thousands of times.

But do you know exactly what altcoin season is and when it arrives? Many people miss it and then regret it.

Altcoins are simply all cryptocurrencies except Bitcoin. Ethereum, Solana, Polygon – they all fall into the altcoin category. Historically, BTC was the first to hit the market, followed by others, which is why they are called "alternatives." From a technical perspective, the entire system is tied to Bitcoin – if it drops, usually the others follow.

The reason for altcoin season is actually simple: after Bitcoin shows strong growth, investors start shifting the profits they’ve made from BTC into other tokens to maximize gains. This large capital flow quickly pushes altcoins upward.

So how can you tell? The altcoin index and Bitcoin dominance index show this. When Bitcoin dominance drops below 50%, we can usually say that altcoin season has started. If the altcoin index rises above 75%, it means that 75% of altcoins have performed better than Bitcoin in the last 90 days – this is a definitive indicator.

2021 is a good example: Gala +10891%, Axie Infinity +10598%, Solana +7998%, Fantom +7155%, Polygon +6805%... Some people became millionaires during this period.

But you should be careful when choosing altcoins. Don’t buy just because it’s popular. What is the technology behind the project? Does it solve a real problem? Who are the team? Is the community active? How is the tokenomics – how many assets are in circulation, and how much more will be issued?

By the way, look at altcoins listed not only on major exchanges but also on smaller platforms. Because some projects can show greater potential when initially listed on limited exchanges.

In conclusion: No one can say for sure which altcoins will explode during altcoin season. But if you do some research and make the right choices, it’s a good opportunity to make money. Follow the altcoin index and market indicators, do your own research, and don’t be afraid to take risks. The crypto industry provides enough tools for this.
