According to Politico, citing informed sources, the United States and Canada have reached a temporary agreement to avoid 50% tariffs on certain Canadian goods, with the proposal submitted to Trump for approval on August 19. The tariffs are set to take effect at midnight on August 19, local time. During recent intensive negotiations, the U.S. has demanded Canada cancel retaliatory measures on American automobiles and alcohol, and adjust dairy supply management policies. Canada seeks tariff reductions on vehicles and other goods. Negotiators aim to use this "smaller agreement" to advance broader discussions under the USMCA trade accord, though automotive tariffs remain a core point of contention.
