Tesla Falls 1% as NHTSA Pressures Cybercab Over Human Controls, Sets Sept 30 Deadline

On Tuesday, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) sent a special order to Tesla demanding answers on its Cybercab's regulatory compliance. Tesla shares fell about 1% in response. The two-seater Cybercab has no steering wheel or pedals, making it the subject of an NHTSA probe into how Tesla concluded the vehicle met applicable federal motor vehicle safety standards. The agency asked whether humans can operate the vehicle with temporarily attached controls and requested fleet size, operating cities, speed limits, and other compliance details. Failure to provide complete answers by September 30 can result in Justice Department lawsuits and civil penalties up to $27,874 daily, capped at approximately $139 million for related violations. No automaker has previously sold vehicles without steering wheels or pedals to the public.
