Sionna Therapeutics Stock Plunges 92% on Monday as SION-719 Cystic Fibrosis Drug Fails Mid-Stage Trial

According to Sionna Therapeutics, SION stock plunged roughly 92% on Monday after the biotech firm's experimental cystic fibrosis drug SION-719 failed to meet its mid-stage trial goals. The drug, tested as an add-on therapy to Vertex's Trikafta in 15 cystic fibrosis patients, barely lowered sweat chloride levels—a key marker of protein function improvement—showing only a minor difference versus placebo that was not statistically significant. The company abandoned plans to advance SION-719 in this combination role and said it will preserve capital while assessing its path forward, ending the second quarter with approximately $268 million in cash. Vertex's stock rose 7% following the news. Stifel downgraded Sionna to Hold from Buy, lowering its price target to $7 from $55.
