According to a leaked Pentagon memo released on May 11, the US State Department indicated it would review the UK's sovereignty claim over the Falkland Islands. Dr Andrea Clausen, chief executive of the Falkland Islands government, accused President Trump of using the territory as a 'pawn' to punish Britain for not supporting his Iran war policies. Argentina's President Javier Milei, a Trump ally, reiterated that the Falklands 'were, are and will always be Argentine.'
A US naval battle group led by the USS Nimitz was recently spotted sailing alongside Argentine warships in the South Atlantic, raising concerns among islanders. In a 2013 referendum, 99.8% of Falkland Islanders voted to remain a British Overseas Territory. Argentina disputes the vote's legitimacy.
