Anthropic CEO Amodei Proposes Three-Step Plan to Slow AI Capability Advancement

According to CNBC, on Saturday, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei published an essay proposing a three-step plan to slow the pace of AI model development. The plan aims to temper progress without sacrificing competitive advantage or U.S. leadership in AI. Step one, which Anthropic has already committed to unilaterally, grants third-party evaluators employee-level access to verify safety practices. Step two encourages leading AI companies in democracies to coordinate and establish common safety standards, while step three calls for coordination between democratic and authoritarian governments. Amodei clarified that "pacing does not mean halting model training or technical progress, but ensuring companies take adequate time to align and safeguard their models, and for third party evaluators to confirm this."
