Makita U.S.A., Inc. has initiated a recall of approximately 63,000 cordless grease guns and grease gun hoses due to a significant safety hazard. This recall highlights the critical importance of hardware safety in both traditional and emerging Web3 industries.

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), the flexible grease gun hose can develop a hole, allowing grease to be ejected during use. This defect poses a serious laceration risk to users, emphasizing the need for rigorous quality control in all types of hardware manufacturing.

The company has reported five incidents worldwide where the grease gun hose failed, resulting in five laceration injuries. All reported incidents occurred outside the United States, underscoring the global nature of hardware safety concerns.

The recall specifically affects the following products:

  • Makita Professional Cordless Grease Guns: Models XPG01S1, XPG01SR1, and XPG01Z
  • Makita Grease Gun Hoses: Models 191A79-9, 191A80-4, 191W59-7, and 191W58-9

All affected models feature spring ends, with the model number located on the manufacturer label on the right side of the grease guns.

Makita has urged customers to immediately cease using the recalled cordless grease guns and grease gun hoses. Users are advised to contact Makita for a free replacement hose to mitigate the safety risk.

These recalled products were widely distributed through hardware and home improvement stores nationwide, as well as various online platforms. They were available for purchase from June 2020 through January 2025, with prices ranging from $60 to $390.

Web3 Industry Impact:

While this recall directly affects traditional hardware tools, it serves as a crucial reminder for the Web3 and cryptocurrency sectors. As blockchain technology increasingly integrates with physical devices — from hardware wallets to mining equipment — the importance of robust safety measures cannot be overstated.

The potential for physical harm due to hardware malfunctions could have severe implications for user trust in Web3 technologies. As the industry continues to innovate and develop new hardware solutions, manufacturers must prioritize safety and quality control to maintain the integrity of the ecosystem.

This incident also highlights the need for enhanced due diligence in the Web3 supply chain. As decentralized networks rely on a variety of hardware components, ensuring the safety and reliability of each element becomes paramount to the overall security and functionality of the system.

For cryptocurrency exchanges and platforms, this recall serves as a reminder to carefully vet any hardware partnerships or integrations. Ensuring the safety and reliability of recommended or affiliated hardware products is crucial for maintaining user trust and platform integrity in the competitive digital asset marketplace.
