According to Russia's Foreign Ministry, spokesman Maria Zakharova dismissed on August 13 Japan's protest over President Putin's visit to Iturup Island. Zakharova said the remarks by Japanese Prime Minister Takayuki Noda and Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi are politically meaningless and legally invalid, dismissing them as "revanchist" and unacceptable. Russia maintains that Iturup Island, part of the Southern Kuril Islands, belongs to Russia as an "inseparable territory" under post-World War II agreements and UN Charter provisions.
