According to NADA News, on August 6, Japanese convenience store chain Lawson completed a trial of stablecoin JPYC payments on its existing point-of-sale (POS) system. The test demonstrated that stablecoin payments could be integrated without hardware replacement or major system overhauls—retailers simply added a new payment method to their existing terminals.
Users scanned a barcode from HashPort Wallet on their smartphone via the POS terminal and approved payment on their device, similar to existing QR code payment experiences. HashPort implemented gasless transactions, with the wallet covering blockchain network fees instead of consumers. The entire payment process completed in approximately two seconds. Lawson executives indicated the company is examining commercialization feasibility but offered no specific timeline, citing the need to validate refund procedures and operational requirements.
