According to CNBC, global government bond yields surged to multiyear highs overnight on September 3. Germany's 10-year yield reached its highest level since 2011, Japan's exceeded 3%, and the U.S. 10-year yield hit its highest point since November 2023.
Experts attribute the increases to large-scale government bond issuance, inflation concerns stemming from energy price shocks, and expectations that central banks will maintain tightening policies for an extended period. Analysts warn that prolonged elevated rates pose particular risks to governments with high debt burdens (notably Japan with debt exceeding 200% of GDP and France facing fiscal challenges), highly-leveraged companies dependent on variable-rate borrowing, and low-income households facing higher mortgage and auto loan costs. Higher bond yields also put downward pressure on equity valuations due to increased discount rates.
