CFTC and SEC to Hold Meetings on Crypto Regulation on Aug. 20-16, Absent CLARITY Act

According to a notice issued Thursday, the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) will hold a meeting for its Innovation Advisory Committee on Aug. 20 to discuss cryptocurrency regulation, as well as AI and prediction markets. The agenda will include "areas where regulatory action can complement future congressional legislation," likely referring to the Digital Asset Market Clarity (CLARITY) Act, which failed to advance in the Senate before its August recess.

The CFTC announcement followed a similar notice from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), which announced plans to meet on Aug. 16 to discuss "new rules to create a tailored offering regime for certain investment contracts involving crypto assets." An SEC spokesperson said the agency would support Congress' effort to pass crypto market structure legislation but would work "within its authority" to advance regulation until such a law is passed.
