The implementation of the European Union’s Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA) is reshaping the stablecoin landscape by introducing clearer compliance standards for digital assets. According to payments infrastructure firm Decta, the market capitalization of actively traded MiCA-compliant euro stablecoins increased significantly before the end of the EU’s crypto service provider transition period. While euro-backed stablecoins are showing growth momentum, they continue to face challenges competing with the much larger dollar-based stablecoin market.

Euro Stablecoins Gain Momentum Under New MiCA Framework

The European Union’s Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA) has introduced a new regulatory structure for digital assets, including stablecoins. As companies adapt to stricter compliance requirements, euro-denominated stablecoins have started gaining more attention within the European crypto market.

According to a report from payments infrastructure provider Decta, the market capitalization of MiCA-compliant euro stablecoins increased substantially in the year before the end of the EU’s crypto-asset service provider (CASP) transition period.

The report suggests that regulatory clarity is encouraging the development of compliant digital assets, although euro stablecoins remain a relatively small segment compared with the global dominance of US dollar-backed stablecoins.

Market Capitalization of Compliant Euro Stablecoins Rises 128%

Decta’s research tracked eight euro stablecoins that met its criteria of actively issuing tokens while maintaining measurable market capitalization and trading activity.

The data showed that the combined market capitalization of these eight MiCA-compliant euro stablecoins reached $673.9 million on June 28, 2026, compared with $295.6 million on June 30, 2025. This represents a 128% increase over the one-year period.

Trading activity also increased during the same timeframe. The total trading volume of these stablecoins rose from $47 million to $67.3 million, representing a growth rate of 43.1%.

During the study period, the number of actively tracked compliant euro stablecoins increased from five to eight, indicating that more projects are entering the market under the new regulatory environment.

Euro Stablecoins Still Hold a Limited Position Against Dollar Tokens

Although MiCA-compliant euro stablecoins have expanded, the overall market remains heavily influenced by US dollar-based digital assets.

Decta noted that euro stablecoins are developing from a relatively small starting point. According to CoinGecko data, the total market capitalization of US dollar-pegged stablecoins is approximately $300 billion, significantly exceeding the combined value of the eight euro stablecoins tracked in the report.

The market capitalization of these actively traded MiCA-compliant euro stablecoins represents only around 0.22% of the dollar stablecoin market.

This gap highlights the current challenge facing euro-based digital currencies: while regulatory frameworks are helping establish trust and compliance, achieving broader adoption requires competing with deeply established dollar-based stablecoin infrastructure.

MiCA Transition Period Brings New Compliance Requirements

The growth of compliant euro stablecoins occurred alongside the implementation of stricter European crypto regulations.

Starting July 1, companies providing crypto-asset services within the European Union generally needed to obtain MiCA authorization. Decta’s analysis covered the period leading up to the end of this CASP transition phase, providing insight into market conditions before the full regulatory requirements took effect.

MiCA aims to create a unified regulatory environment across EU member states by introducing standards related to licensing, consumer protection, and operational requirements.

For stablecoin issuers, the framework establishes additional obligations designed to improve transparency and strengthen market stability.

Debate Continues Over MiCA’s Impact on Euro Stablecoin Competitiveness

While MiCA provides clearer rules for digital asset markets, its influence on euro stablecoins remains a topic of discussion among industry participants and policymakers.

Supporters argue that stronger regulatory requirements can improve confidence in euro-backed digital assets. However, some industry groups believe that strict rules may create challenges for European stablecoin issuers when competing with global dollar-based alternatives.

A report from Blockchain for Europe suggested that MiCA has improved the safety standards of euro stablecoins but may reduce their commercial competitiveness. The organization pointed to requirements such as reserve obligations and restrictions on interest payments as factors that could limit growth.

Similar concerns were raised in a policy discussion from Brussels-based think tank Bruegel, which suggested that adjustments to liquidity requirements and greater support mechanisms could help strengthen the euro stablecoin ecosystem.

European Central Bank Raises Concerns Over Stablecoin Expansion

The discussion around euro stablecoins also involves broader considerations regarding financial stability and monetary policy.

The European Central Bank (ECB) has expressed concerns that a significant expansion of euro stablecoin issuance could affect traditional banking activities and influence monetary policy management.

The ECB warned that increased adoption of stablecoins could potentially impact bank lending systems. At the same time, the institution rejected concerns that stricter European regulations would necessarily accelerate the shift toward digital dollar dominance.

These discussions reflect the broader challenge facing regulators: creating an environment that supports digital asset innovation while maintaining financial stability.

Conclusion

The rapid growth of MiCA-compliant euro stablecoins demonstrates how regulation is influencing the evolution of Europe’s digital asset market. Although these stablecoins have achieved significant percentage growth, they remain far behind dollar-based alternatives in terms of overall market size and adoption.

As MiCA continues to shape the crypto landscape, the future development of euro stablecoins will depend on balancing regulatory protection, market competitiveness, and practical adoption. The ongoing policy discussions across Europe will likely play an important role in determining how digital euro-based assets develop within the global stablecoin ecosystem.
