The TON blockchain has recently implemented a significant infrastructure upgrade designed to improve transaction processing speed and network efficiency. According to statements shared by Telegram’s leadership, the update introduces a new consensus-related technology that greatly accelerates block production and transaction confirmation.

The blockchain network known as TON (The Open Network) has recently completed an important technical upgrade aimed at improving overall operational performance. The update was highlighted by Telegram founder and CEO Pavel Durov through a public message on the Telegram platform.

Following the implementation of the upgrade, several core network metrics have improved noticeably. The blockchain now processes operations significantly faster, with overall system throughput reportedly increasing by roughly ten times. At the same time, the frequency at which new blocks are produced has multiplied, enabling the network to confirm transactions far more rapidly than before.

As a result of these changes, transaction confirmations on the network can now occur in less than one second, meaning that transfers and other blockchain actions are completed almost immediately from the user’s perspective.

Catchain 2.0 and Improvements to Network Coordination

The primary driver behind this performance increase is the introduction of Catchain 2.0, an updated technological component responsible for improving communication and coordination between network nodes.

In blockchain systems, validators must continually exchange information and reach agreement about the state of the ledger. Catchain 2.0 refines these processes by optimizing the flow of data between nodes and improving how consensus messages are distributed across the network.

According to the development team, these changes allow the TON mainnet to achieve sub-second transaction finality beginning in April. In practical terms, this means that once a transaction is included in a block, it can be considered permanently confirmed in under a second, reducing waiting times that previously affected certain applications.

The Role of TON in the Telegram Ecosystem

TON is designed to function as the blockchain infrastructure supporting various digital services within the broader Telegram ecosystem. Its architecture aims to integrate blockchain capabilities directly into a widely used communication platform.

Several types of applications rely on TON’s functionality. These include cryptocurrency transfers between users, payment features embedded within chats, and decentralized services built on top of the network. Another major component of the ecosystem is the growing number of Mini Apps operating inside Telegram.

Mini Apps are lightweight applications that run directly within the messaging interface, allowing users to access services such as games, financial tools, and digital marketplaces without leaving the chat environment. Because these applications often require rapid interactions, the speed of blockchain confirmation plays a crucial role in maintaining a smooth user experience.

Why Transaction Speed Matters

In blockchain-based systems, confirmation time has a direct influence on the types of services that can be built on the network.

If a transaction requires many seconds before it is considered final, certain real-time interactions become difficult to implement. Payment scenarios that aim to feel as immediate as sending a text message, for example, rely on extremely fast confirmation speeds.

The earlier confirmation delays on TON limited the practicality of some interactive features. With the new upgrade reducing confirmation time to less than a second, the network is moving closer to the responsiveness typically associated with Web2 platforms.

This improvement is particularly relevant for a platform such as Telegram, which has a global user base exceeding one billion accounts and increasingly integrates digital services within its messaging environment.

Possible Effects on the Network Economy

The upgrade may also influence the economic dynamics of the TON network itself.

Because the blockchain now generates blocks more frequently, validators responsible for maintaining the network can potentially receive rewards more often. This could encourage greater participation among validators and individuals who stake tokens to support the system’s security.

Increased participation in staking and validation activities may strengthen the network by distributing responsibility across a larger group of contributors, which in turn can improve resilience and decentralization.

Future Development Plans

In his remarks about the upgrade, Pavel Durov suggested that this improvement represents only the first stage of a broader series of technical updates. The initiative has been informally described as “Make TON Great Again” (MTONGA).

One of the goals discussed for future updates involves further reducing transaction fees. According to early indications, the development team hopes to lower the already relatively small transaction costs on TON by approximately six times.

If implemented successfully, these reductions could make blockchain-based services within Telegram even more accessible for everyday usage.
